The first quarterly meeting for the year 2000 of the Texas Water Monitoring Council began with introductions. The minutes from the November meeting were approved. A "reminder" letter to be sent to each of the council agencies was discussed. The purpose of this letter would be for each agency to confirm or appoint representatives to the Council. Cindy Loeffler announced that she would be stepping down as the Council chair and asked for nominations for a new chair. Several members expressed interest in the position but felt they needed to visit with their supervisors before committing. It was agreed that these individuals would check before the next meeting. Selection of a new chair was postponed until the next meeting. Eric Mendelmen, Texas Watch, gave a description of the Texas Watch Program, which is now part of Southwest Texas State University. Eric also presented a proposal for a simultaneous water sampling event to take place on Earth Day. A similar event was conducted in the Colorado River Basin last Earth Day and had 70 participants. One goal of the Earth Day event is to team professional and volunteer monitors wherever possible. The Texas Watch Statewide Monitors will meet on January 20 in San Marcos to further develop the idea. Several Council members agreed to participate in the meeting. Kimberly Ianelli, Texas Water Foundation, pointed out that this event would correspond with Texas Water Month which will be April 15- May 15. More information about the Earth Day event can be found at Tx_watch@gogeo.swstu.edu. The 3rd Texas Water Monitoring Congress, tentatively set for September 18-20, was discussed. Kimberly Ianelli suggested online registration as a way to streamline the process. Russell Pankratz thought it was technically possible to do. Setting a deadline for registration refunds was discussed as a way to discourage "no-shows". USGS will provide a list of vendors to contact as participants/sponsors. Patrick Roques and Darrell Peckham volunteered to contact vendors. David Thorkildsen will check on souvenirs. General discussion for the Congress format was discussed. Cindy Loeffler, Paul Rodman, Janie Hopkins and Darrell Peckham volunteered to meet again on January 20 to further develop the program to present at the next meeting. Meeting adjourned at noon. Next meeting scheduled for February 3rd 2000 at 10:30 am at USGS.
